 In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

It takes YEARS after their actual high school time to end up, you know, having anything like a prom. Sofia is back, and with her their full class spread from the year everything went wrong was finally reunited. And David hadn't really joined the dancing. It wasn't because of the conversation with Sofia, it wasn't because of feeling strange about anything, it was because it felt... well, it felt strangely like cheating while Jean-Paul was up having a serious conversation with the Five.

He waited until he felt Jean-Paul at the periphery of his mind, a sure sign that the man was coming down the steps to see his husband. Then David offered very quiet, polite excuse to Sofia before heading up the stairs toward the kitchen where he knew the Five were. They were, more or less, filtering out at their own paces, some likely bound for the party.

And when he slipped into the kitchen he looked at Josh. The others he nodded to, but to Josh he offered a light smile.

"So, has Jean-Paul decided to let up and stop hogging you? There is a party going on, Josh Foley. A dance. You chickening out of this one just because of how stupid the two of us were last time?"

[It was official. David was NOT a fan of team-ups. Especially when team-ups meant joint operations with X-Force. Especially especially when the team-ups had resulted in David and Quire on the wrong side of a now destroyed Krakoan Gate int he middle of a bad situation?

The situation in question was a blizzard in Northern Canada, and it was David's knowledge of the area alone that had led them to a nearby cabin. Foresight was also useful, given he had brought fleet seeds with him. He'd sent a message on that they were alone but hey, they could get through the snow and Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie could come collect them later.

That didn't make the situation any better, because David often had a hard time dealing with Quire. The omega was a fucking asshole, in allt he worst ways in David's opinion.]

Don't suppose you know how to start a fire. There's firewood, but I'm not finding matches.

[ despite the cold, quentin looks faintly flushed, mouth a thin line in his face as he takes in the cabin, the small bed with its meager blankets, every place where cold air seeps in around windows and doors. it's fucking freezing, it's like some fucking trope right out of a comic book, and he's with david of all people.

he grimaces at the question, but instead of answering for the moment, he starts plugging the holes with his tk, leaving little pink glowing spots around the cabin as he closes off the worst of the drafts. he shuffles the running of those dozen small shields into a background process in his mind, then finally turns to peer at the fireplace. ]

Sure, [ he says, and lifts a hand, snapping a pink psionic flame into existence between thumb and forefinger. ] But I don't have the first fucking clue how to keep it going once it's lit. [ like.. how do you stack wood so it doesn't just gutter out? how do you keep it from burning through their supply too quickly?

he probably should have paid more attention during logan's outdoorsy style classes, but honestly, he'd never been interested in it, and there'd always been someone else around more invested in it anyway. ]

( all those romances that seemed to be the end of the world fade away after the summer, and it might have been a sad thing except for the fact that it leaves them all much closer for it. gansey, henry and blue go off on their road trip. ronan builds a life in the barns. adam goes to harvard. they're all scattered across the country in a way that they haven't ever been since becoming a unit, but they make up for it in other ways. group chats firing off at all hours and video conferences filled with stories and laughter, and middle of the night phone calls made hushed and quiet when someone can't sleep.

sometimes, when they're really lucky, they even get to visit.

she's carved a whole three days out of their schedule to see adam, while the other two do some old money activity that made blue want to tear her eyes out when it had even been mentioned. it seems like he's found his stride here, and it's something of a relief to see that for herself. she sits on her hotel bed with him and recounts stupid stories from their whimsical little road trip, and the two of them laugh, and it's nice.

except there's also this underlying...tension, that blue doesn't expect. she isn't going to bring it up at all, happy to write it off as exam stress, but he rubs at his temple for the third time in as many minutes and blue frowns. )

Are you alright? If today's not a good day, the guys aren't coming back for a few days. ( three days and a far too nice hotel room paid for by all that old money, despite her loudest of protests, before henry and gansey and that eco monstrosity roll back into town and pick her up again. ) You look...stressed.

[ It was all exciting and he was looking forward to this trip. He's seen them all through video chatting, and he has so many different text threads going, but to get to see Blue in person is so exciting and he's so happy for it.

So he's not sure why since the moment he hugged her in greeting that he's feeling a pressure within that is unlike anything he has ever experienced. Or even what he could call it. Given the reaction of his body though he's embarrassed and hating on himself a little.

Or a lot.

Not that the surroundings are doing much for him. His first words in seeing the room had been to wonder, aloud, if they could have picked a more pretentious hotel. He's not sure they could.

So he let himself stew on that, making jokes about it, but the pressure within has been getting worse, and he isn't trying to hide how his nostrils keep flaring, acutely aware of how Blue smells spicy and sweet and sexy. But he's not supposed to be thinking about her like that. ]

[ He raises his gaze, staring at her for a minute. There's such raw, desperate hunger on his gaze in that moment, unable to hide how he's feeling about her, the hunger he's feeling for her in ways he's never felt before. ]

[ And in that moment realization hits him. Stories he's heard from others. He stares at her, stunned and utterly confused. ]

( there are lots and lots of conversations had with him about suppressants, and missing doses, and the effectiveness of suppressants when constantly mixed with substances like a chaotic little cocktail, but unsurprisingly nick doesn't spend an awful lot of time listening to doctor's advice.

it's not a problem, right up until it is a problem. the heat creeps up on him without him noticing at all, a slight warmth around the collar turning into unavoidable burning desire in a matter of hours, and of course he's out in public. heads are turning. nick hightails it out of the bar quickly, but that's a temporary solution at best.

so he makes a phone call. probably not the first one that's started like this, either, though it's not usually quite so...time sensitive. )

[ as a rule, henry doesn't answer the phone when nick calls after 12am, because that's when nick asks for things. sometimes pointless, sometimes serious, sometimes an excuse to avoid asking for what he actually wants. the only problem is that henry's never been able to actually follow the rule. very briefly, he considers what would happen if he let nick handle his own mistakes.

it wouldn't work. the only idea henry hates more than nick not listening to him and then asking for help anyway, is him needing help and not asking, or going to someone worse. and honestly, everyone is worse.

so henry picks up. he's fully prepared to make it at least sound like he would take convincing when he hears the urgency in nick's voice. he squares his shoulders, gripping the phone tighter. ]

[ It's not Madoc's first dinner party with the O'Broin family. They were always wild affairs filled with witches and magic workers and dozens of other mystical beasties depending on the dinner and the phase of the moon and why they were gathering. Most were there that night because of a full moon in Beltaine and so wine flowed and the foods were filled with aphrodisiacs and sultry finger foods.

Madoc was there because he'd been told there was going to be a party crasher who had hopes to ruin the magic being raised by the family and their friends. Madoc had been hired to make sure that didn't happen. So while others flirted and teased and hormones began to flow, the barghest wandered the party with a glass of whiskey in hand and giving no attention to those that tried flirting with him.

Circling to the second floor as clothes were being shed and people were beginning to slip outside and under the moonlight, Madoc finds himself hit almost instantly with a scent he hadn't counted on. Rich and musky and utterly intoxicating. No one had warned him there would be an omega there. An unmated and unclaimed omega.

Drawing a deep breath, his cock throbbing with the beating of his heart. He needed to get the hell out of here, but he realizes this could be the one he was hired to watch for and this could all be a ploy. ]

Steve knew that it was super important that he kept on top of his suppressants. It'd been drilled into him since he'd come out of the ice, especially since the ones he needed were so damned strong, to be able to work with the serum. Not to mention, how would it look, if Captain America went into Rut and acted like some feral animal and got the Omega's Rights activists all in a tizzy. Not that Steve had ever hurt someone, but the press did like to make assumptions.

And everyone assumed that Steve Rogers, Captain America, Alpha extraordinaire, must have incredibly super-powered Ruts. Which, okay, maybe, but still. Usually he stayed on his suppressants, until he could get himself knocked out for a few days, and ignored it. It wasn't, well dignified.

After all, who'd want to get stuck with him for a Rut anyways? Most of the team was Betas or Alphas anyways, and he certainly wasn't going to ask any of the Omegas to put up with him.

So he stayed on top of his suppressants, and took care of business. Except this time, with everything going on, it had somehow skipped his mind. He'd like to blame the hormones, but he probably shouldn't. And now, it was the middle of the afternoon, and he felt like he had a fever, and somewhere, in the Avengers compound, he could smell an Omega.
