 In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

It takes YEARS after their actual high school time to end up, you know, having anything like a prom. Sofia is back, and with her their full class spread from the year everything went wrong was finally reunited. And David hadn't really joined the dancing. It wasn't because of the conversation with Sofia, it wasn't because of feeling strange about anything, it was because it felt... well, it felt strangely like cheating while Jean-Paul was up having a serious conversation with the Five.

He waited until he felt Jean-Paul at the periphery of his mind, a sure sign that the man was coming down the steps to see his husband. Then David offered very quiet, polite excuse to Sofia before heading up the stairs toward the kitchen where he knew the Five were. They were, more or less, filtering out at their own paces, some likely bound for the party.

And when he slipped into the kitchen he looked at Josh. The others he nodded to, but to Josh he offered a light smile.

"So, has Jean-Paul decided to let up and stop hogging you? There is a party going on, Josh Foley. A dance. You chickening out of this one just because of how stupid the two of us were last time?"

[It was official. David was NOT a fan of team-ups. Especially when team-ups meant joint operations with X-Force. Especially especially when the team-ups had resulted in David and Quire on the wrong side of a now destroyed Krakoan Gate int he middle of a bad situation?

The situation in question was a blizzard in Northern Canada, and it was David's knowledge of the area alone that had led them to a nearby cabin. Foresight was also useful, given he had brought fleet seeds with him. He'd sent a message on that they were alone but hey, they could get through the snow and Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie could come collect them later.

That didn't make the situation any better, because David often had a hard time dealing with Quire. The omega was a fucking asshole, in allt he worst ways in David's opinion.]

Don't suppose you know how to start a fire. There's firewood, but I'm not finding matches.

[ despite the cold, quentin looks faintly flushed, mouth a thin line in his face as he takes in the cabin, the small bed with its meager blankets, every place where cold air seeps in around windows and doors. it's fucking freezing, it's like some fucking trope right out of a comic book, and he's with david of all people.

he grimaces at the question, but instead of answering for the moment, he starts plugging the holes with his tk, leaving little pink glowing spots around the cabin as he closes off the worst of the drafts. he shuffles the running of those dozen small shields into a background process in his mind, then finally turns to peer at the fireplace. ]

Sure, [ he says, and lifts a hand, snapping a pink psionic flame into existence between thumb and forefinger. ] But I don't have the first fucking clue how to keep it going once it's lit. [ like.. how do you stack wood so it doesn't just gutter out? how do you keep it from burning through their supply too quickly?

he probably should have paid more attention during logan's outdoorsy style classes, but honestly, he'd never been interested in it, and there'd always been someone else around more invested in it anyway. ]

[Which is weird to say to someone who is a telekinetic telepath and thus literally was all brains and no brawn. Hell, David was more built than Quentin, which he knew had less to do with his Alpha status and more to do with a lot of hard work. He wants to ask how the fuck a psionic flame even works, but he really doesn't think it's going to be something he wants to think about too much. The knowledge is probably even there in his head already and he preferred not to pry because he was half worried it was something to do with a word starting with a 'p' and ending with a 'hoenix force'. So instead he moved to the fireplace to take the wood out and begin stacking it.

He can probably get away without the kindling even.]

[He looked at Quentin, frowning.]

You feeling okay? I don't have much on me, but I do have some medical supplies if you're injured or feeling sick.

Fuck you, [ he says without heat, more reflex than anything else. quentin is brains and brawn, thanks, he's just particular about what he puts into his brain. and he doesn't have david's handy mutation, which.. is actually a pretty incredible one, even if he doesn't like people knowing he appreciates things about them.

he's trying to be a better person, bit by bit, but he's also wildly unwilling to be vulnerable in any way around most people.

he ignores the question for the moment, waiting for the other man to be finished before flicking the flame toward the logs, setting them ablaze. it burns pink for a moment, two, before fading into a normal red-orange-yellow. only once he's certain it's neither going out nor exploding horribly does he come back to the question.

.. damn, does he feel okay? he's warm in spite of the cold they'd just come in from, and he feels.. odd. maybe he's just drained, though; it's been a long day, and he'd really been asked to push his abilities at times. ] I'm not sick, man, I'm probably just tired. [ he flicks his fingers, creating psionic sparks. ] Phenomenal cosmic powers-- [ then a gesture to himself, brows lofting, indicating his slight shape. ] --itty bitty living space.

[ yeah, he quoted disney, shut up. ]

[Disney earns a snort of amusement from David. Of course Quentin was all Disney's bitch.]

I always knew you were small brained. But let's get you some sleep. Best way to stay warm in this situation is to stay close to the fire. But we don't want to be right on the cold floor.

[He moved immediately for the bed, looking at the mattress.]

I'll move this by the fire with the blankets. I get you're tired, but the best thing we can do to warm up is to get a wall behind where we set up, to bounce the heat back to us.

[ the insult immediately earns quentin flipping him the bird with both hands, but he doesn't otherwise address it. he feels fucking off, and he just wants to get through this so once it's over he can put as much distance between them again as possible. ]

Jesus, [ he mutters, rubbing a hand over his face. ] Just because I don't go camping doesn't mean I'm clueless. [ instead of trying to create a wall with the detritus of the cabin, he just stretches a tk shield behind them from wall to wall, then from ceiling to floor, taking a moment to add it to the divided off section of his brain running the smaller shields plugging holes in the cabin. with the larger one holding them in about a third of the space, he takes focus away from the little shields outside their part of the cabin. it lets the draft back in the rest of the small building, but since they're not using it right now anyway, it's fine. ]

I can run this-- [ he points to the pink barrier behind them, planting his other hand on his hip. ] --in the background while I sleep. [ it won't be particularly restful sleep, but anything's better than nothing. ]

[The TK shield earns a worried frown. If Quentin was tired, then it could mean the shield would be a new thing to tax him. Worse, what if it didn't last when he fell asleep? Quentin was capable of some impressive feats of TK, but even he had limits. Even the assurance wasn't very, well, reassuring.]

You're sure?

[He was busy settling the mattress and blankets down on the floor.]

Because, being honest and concerned, you look like shit. Like you're burning up. Have you ever tried to hold psychic constructs when feverish?

[David at last moved to Quentin, putting a hand on his forehead, trying to get a read on his temperature. And in the process the got a brief scent of something very concerning.

Oh.]

[ he starts to say something, probably along the lines of david having no idea what he can or can't do, they're not fucking friends. hell, they barely know one another. but then the alpha steps in and just puts a hand on him, and quentin immediately jerks back, slamming into his own shield, eyes wide and startled in his face. ]

Don't touch me, [ he spits, angry, but more importantly, alarmed. it felt.. good. and that close, david had smelled good.

oh no. oh fuck no.

even though he'd normally rather die than back away and give someone ammunition against him--imagined or not--he finds himself scuttling back to the furthest corner of their contained space, heart hammering in his chest with panic. he cannot be going into heat. he's not due for at least another two weeks, and normally he's on suppressants for them. as a member of x-force, he can't really risk getting his heat when he's needed, after all. so what the hell is triggering it so early?

something during the mission earlier? one of the other alphas in the team? david himself? ]

I'm not-- I'm not due.

[Well shit. See, this was why X-Factor was all alphas and betas, to prevent this sort of issue inthe field. They needed to be able to work, to always be able to work, and to be able to hold their own in situations where they had to deal with pushy human alphas. But Omega-Level mutants and Omega almost always went hand in hand. There were exceptions, and in a population so small it probably spoke to it not being a hard and fast rule, but still, great power was a complication sometimes.]

There are more than a few factors that can lead to an early cycle, and you know it. The question is what we do about this.

[The most logical course is to tell Jean-Paul 'fuck it come get us' in this blizzard. Which could get them hurt. And the instincts that the scent around Quentin was forcing to the forefront of David's mind said that was bad idea. Other alphas was a bad idea.

David forced that thought down.]

Knock me out. You're more than skilled enough at that. We can't do anything about your body, but you can put me under a sleep deep enough to give you relative privacy.

[ ruthless, he shuts down as much of the parts of his brain that govern his omega physiology as he safely can, giving himself a little extra time to focus, to think this through. david's right that he can knock him out and keep him under, at least for a while. but if he's running the shield, too, it's going to be tricky once his heat really gets underway.

and the longer he goes without help, without satisfaction, the more his instincts will take over, and he may just wake david anyway. and it's not going to just go away. not without help or a lot longer than he suspects they have. ]

My heats aren't short, [ he admits, reluctant, worried. ] They can last all day even with an alpha. And without one-- [ the thought alone exhausts him. he's going to be dehydrated, in pain, and there's still the issue of the fire, which will have to be tended to.

he rubs his palms over the tops of his thighs, flinching as he realizes how sensitive he is. being this close, in an enclosed space with an alpha is not helping stave off his heat. ] .. I can keep you out for a while, anyway, if you want to try it. [ maybe they'll get lucky. ]

[David's known longer heats than that, but it isn't his right to share other people's details with Quire. But he's not wrong. It's going to be an issue, the storm is going to take a while to blow out. Until then they're stuck. David rises and backs away, needs to pace, needs to get away from that smell.]

This is about what you need, Quire. I can, probably, keep myself under control for a while. I just... None of my training really covered this.
