[ damian is no stranger to death. its a friend in this line of work, a constant companion hovering at his shoulder. its hands wrapped around his neck in a stranglehold, promising a brutal end to a short life. death does not frighten him.
but people dying for him does.
he notices a second too late. the fork in his hand could've become a projectile, knocking the gun askew. he could've ducked. he could've vaulted over the table. he could've done anything, anything, anything.
instead he'd been distracted. enjoying his father's attention. appreciating how for once it was undivided, how he wasn't competing with a sibling or a mission.
and so someone else tackles the robber. someone else shouts for help. damian only freezes and turns his head, watching the consequences of his inaction play out. ]

[ he's a masterclass in medicine. he knows more than anyone his age rightfully should about all the ways there are to kill a person, and he knows a fatal injury when he sees one. still, he turns and does what he can. his hands are no longer the tiny hands of a child, but they're were built for taking lives. not saving them. he can't staunch the flow. ]
